DIY Medieval History Tic Tac Toe Game Instructions

Finding ways to have fun with Medieval history isn't always easy. Creating a tic tac toe DIY game is a great way to take some of the pressure off learning and add fun to your homeschool routine (or enrich what was taught at school).

Using Games To Learn About Medieval Times

We've been learning about Medieval History in our homeschool community this year. For field day, I decided to run my station with a little game of Medieval Tic Tac Toe. You can choose any symbol for your rocks. For this project, I kept it easy: Castles, Shields (the cross because it's a Christian community), princesses, and swords. I figured this way, there would be a little something for both boys and girls. The project was not as involved as I thought; my kids even helped. After all, that's what homeschooling is all about.

Tic Tac Toe DIY Game Supplies Needed

  • 1 bag of river rocks (you will need at least 10-12 rocks per game). I purchased a bag of 30 to make two games with a few rocks left over in case we messed up or to create personal art.
  • Acrylic paint pens (or acrylic paint)
  • Spray paint (optional)
  • Clear coat
  • A bag or thinly sliced wood to use as your board. I chose the zip bags from Hobby Lobby so that we could keep the games together.
  • A ruler
  • A Sharpie

Directions To Make Your Own DIY Medieval History Tic Tac Toe Game

  1. Wash your rocks with soap and water
  2. Dry your rocks thoroughly (you can bake them in the oven on a cookie sheet for about 10-15 min to speed up the drying process)
  3. Color and decorate your rocks

For the background color, paint the top of the rock or the entire rock, depending on preference. I'm hindsight, I think I could have done this a bit differently. For future rocks, I may spray paint the base color for a smoother effect.

  • Sketch design (or paint if you want to skip this part.
  • Add embellishments
  • Let dry
  • Spray with a clear lacquer (you may want to do this outside or in a well-ventilated space)
  • Let dry completely
  • Measure out your lines on the back of your bag or wood in thirds horizontally and vertically (see picture)
  • Write the name of your game on the front of your bag and decorate it as desired
  • Take pictures and show your friends ?
  • Place rocks in your bag to carry
