healing prayer

What Does the Bible Say About Healing Prayer?

Have you or a loved one struggled with chronic health problems, and no doctor seems to have a workable solution? Have you reached out in prayer, wondering why nothing seems to help or why you continue to struggle?

After suffering through 13 chronic autoimmune and neurological disorders for nearly a decade, I know all too well what it feels like to be sick, abandoned, hopeless, and desperate. Little did I know, answers were literally an arm's length away, waiting for me in my Bible resting in my nightstand drawer.

The worst part of enduring chronic illness: I couldn't work, which prematurely ended my naval career and left me in a season of homelessness; I felt hopeless with suicidal ideations constantly crossing my mind; and I lost my social life, unable to keep up with friends' expectations. Being homeless and lonely was not a choice; life had me drowning in stress from a bombardment of unkind, relentless, and demeaning events repeating in cycles. The enemy completely afflicted me.

Something about hitting rock bottom in life struggles snaps you out of your funk and builds a sense of humility. Feeling abandoned by everyone and everything, even God, is not a good place to be emotionally, physically, or spiritually. When you're in the throes of chronic health problems, it's often difficult to see God still waiting for you. Reaching out to God filled with faith and hope, knowing He is the only one who can genuinely help pull you out of the lowest of low places, is the most challenging and rewarding thing you can do.

What Does the Bible Say About Healing Prayer?

And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

James 5:15

The most powerful prayer for healing is the prayer of faith! Some biblical healing bible verses are James 5:14-15, Psalms 147:3, Mark 5:34, and Matthew 10:1.

Today, I'm a living testimony God answers prayers, even if you don't think you're worthy. Read on to learn how to pray and plead the blood of Jesus upon your life to receive healing.

3 Bible Requirements for Prayers for Healing

The Bible says prayers for healing must be faithful, sincere, and effective.

Prayers for Healing Must Be Made in Faith

The Bible defines faith in Hebrews 11:1 (Aramaic Bible in Plain English). “Now faith is the conviction concerning those things that are in hope, as if it were these things in action, and the revelation of those things that are unseen.”

Faith assures you that the things you're praying and hoping for are in EXISTENCE, even if your physical eyes are yet to perceive them.

The most powerful prayer a sick person can make is one made in FAITH! Yes, even when pain within your body is at its peak, God says, HAVE FAITH.

Consequently, your prayer will yield healing. James 5:15 (NIV) confirms it by saying, “And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.”

The Bible confirms that a prayer made in faith makes sick people whole.

Prayers for Healing Must Be Made in Sincerity

People often fear confessing their sins to other saints for fear of being condemned or exposed to the world.

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

Hebrews 44:13 (BSB)

You cannot hide any sin before your healer, the Lord! Therefore, confess all your sins. Ask for forgiveness by exposing them to other brethren who are in authority so they can pray for you.

Prayers for healing must, therefore, be done in repentance for and by the sick person to be healed.

Prayers for Healing Must Be Effective

God loves a sincere, remorseful heart. The Psalmist confirms it. Psalms 51:17 (NLT) “The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.”

Effective prayer is one made in repentance. God won't withhold his mercies unto such. God will forgive you through His compassion and preserve your soul (Lamentations 3:22).

I have seen what they do, but I will heal them anyway! I will lead them. I will comfort those who mourn, bringing words of praise to their lips. May they have abundant peace, both near and far,” says the Lord, who heals them.

Isaiah 57:18-19 (NLT)

See? Through His mercies also, He won't consider what you've done (Isaiah 57:18-19). He says He will heal you! Consequently, you'll be comforted and at rest (Matthew 11:28). You'll mourn no more but praise your healer. Wherever you'll go, you'll be in perfect peace.

Besides, your life will be preserved for Psalms 107:20 (NIV) says, “He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.” What's the verdict, a prayer made in repentance and faith, will be effective and bring life, peace, and rest to the sick person!

What Does Bible Say About Praying for the Sick?

The Bible says that the sick:

  • Should be anointed with oil
  • Shouldn't be charged for the healing they receive
  • Every disciple of Christ has the supernatural power to heal

One by one, let's discuss the above points.

Anointing Oil Brings Healing

The Bible says that when praying for the sick, the elders should anoint the person with oil. “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the church elders to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the power of prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well….”

Let's ask ourselves a few questions. When and why should the sick person be anointed? James says it's when the person is sick. Why? So that they could get healed. It's Biblical to anoint the sick people. That's not all. Anointing the sick IS NOT a way of PREPARING THEM TO DIE! So, don't be deceived.

Do you remember what Isaiah the prophet said? The anointing BREAKS the YOKE, right? Isaiah 10:27 (NKJV) “It shall come to pass in that day that his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.

So, the anointing will break even the yokes of infirmities.

Believers Can Pray for the Sick!

Praying the prayer of healing isn't only for the elders and other church leaders. Neither is the laying on of hands. No, not at all! The healing ministry is for everyone who believes in the Lord Jesus. Such has the power and authority to rebuke the demon of sickness from another person's body.

When Jesus was with his disciples, he called them and gave them power.

Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

Matthew 10:1 (NIV)

So, they had dominion over;

  • Impure spirits
  • Sickness and diseases

Today, every servant or disciple of Christ is a believer, and they have the authority to pray for a sick person. As long as they believe, the ill person will be healed.

Does that mean that sick believers cannot pray over their healing? Not at all!

You also have authority over the sickness that is tormenting you. The good news is that once you declare healing over your body, you'll have it. Only get rid of all unbelief because obedience is vital.

What Does the Bible Say About Praying for Physical Healing?

God says in Psalms 107:20 that when you pray for physical healing, he will send his Word and heal you. “He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”

You'll be free from all affliction and distress.

What's more?

Healing Is Accessible Anytime, Any Day

The Lord, through the Psalmist, says that he “hears and delivers” when the “righteous cry for help.” It's present tense, not future. So, if you're sick or there's anyone among you sick, call on Him for healing; He will grant it to you RIGHT NOW. He hears the prayers of a righteous person.

You may be on your deathbed at home or in a hospital (or feel like you are); He is waiting. Call unto Him, and He will answer you. But like Jeremiah, you need to ask the Lord to heal and save you from your physical anguish.

Heal me, LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.

Jeremiah 17:14 (NIV)

When you ask him for healing, He will grant it to you.

Sin Hinders Healing

Though NOT ALWAYS, sin is a gateway to physical illness. God tells the Israelites in Exodus 15:26 that if they follow his instructions, obey him, keeping all his commands, then there will be no diseases in their midst.

“And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.”

Exodus 15:26 (KJV)

The Egyptians disobeyed God. So, God allowed sickness to befall them. That means that if you disobey God's commands, then sickness shall be your potion. Here's what happens.

God puts a hedge around you to seal you from sickness and harm of every nature. When you sin, the barrier ceases to be. And, the enemy, the destroyer, begins to inflict you with sickness.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

John 10:10 (NIV)

You should keep sin off your life to enjoy God-given physical health.

Thank God, when you repent and look up to Him for his healing love, He will heal you.

“So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.”

Numbers 21:9 (NIV)

He says, “for I am the Lord that healeth thee.”

Healing Will Be for God's Glory!

As I said previously in this article, it's NOT always that you have removed the hedge over your physical body through sin. Some physical health challenges may be a channel through which God intends to glorify himself.

Take, for example, the man born blind. The disciples were concerned about him, so they inquired if his transgressions or those of his parents had made him blind. In verse three of chapter nine of John, the Bible says, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned.

He further added, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. John 9:1-3

You shouldn't question God about healing that seems to be taking too long. In his appointed time, God will heal you for his glory.

Physical Healing Is for Everyone

You must not be born again to be healed. God loves sinners. One of the healing scriptures says that God doesn't delight in the death of a sinner. We all know that physical sickness causes death. Therefore, God desires to heal you and save you from death.

Jairus was not a believer. But in Luke 8:50, we're told that when Jesus heard that his daughter was sick, He did not hesitate; he healed her.

“Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

Luke 8:50 (NIV)

In another incident, a Canaanite woman prayed to Jesus. In tears, she asked the Lord to help her daughter, who was tormented by unclean spirits. We see Jesus rejecting her request on account of being a Canaanite.

But she insisted that she would take even the ‘bread crumbs' He would offer.

The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. He replied, “It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs.” “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table.” Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment. Matthew 15:25-28 (NIV)

Her fervent prayer was answered! Her words prompted Jesus to heal her daughter. They were full proof that she had faith in Jesus, and instantly, her daughter got healed.

Therefore, all you need to do is believe that you and your loved ones will be healed.

It's Free To Be Healed!

Whenever Jesus healed people, he charged them nothing. Consequently, when he gave his disciples power to heal illnesses and diseases (Matthew 10:8), he commanded them not to charge people for the miracle of healing.

He gave them the gift of healing at no cost; he expected them to HEAL THE SICK AT NO COST!

So, don't be deceived; you should not pay for your healing. It's FREE!

The Prayer Should Be Made in the Name of Jesus

No other name is superior to the Holy name of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible says (Philippians 2:10) that every tongue will confess that he is the Lord. Plus, every knee shall bow before him.

Every disease and sickness shall bow in Jesus' name and leave any unwell person!

Plus, Acts 4:30 states that healing every sickness and disease can only occur at mentioning the mighty name of Christ Jesus. So are signs and wonders, too!

Demons don't heal! Doing so would make their kingdom divided. Matthew 12:22-32

God Uses Doctors To Heal People

The concept that God uses doctors to heal people was a very difficult realization for me because I had been treated by more than 30 specialists that were most definitely not doing God's work. Most of the “treatments” I underwent felt heavy, dark, and arguably satanic, making my overall health and quality of life significantly worse.

However, I've been blessed to meet people from all walks of life throughout the medical field and found that generalizing the claim that “doctors are satanic” is misleading. Many are doing everything they can to serve their patients, even looking to natural healing modalities provided by God. Some medical professionals are even integrating their Christian faith within all aspects of their practices.

Jesus even had a doctor amongst his disciples: Luke.

“Our dear friend Luke, the doctor, and Demas send greetings.”

Colossians 4:14

Jesus wouldn't call a doctor to his ministry if, in the first place, he was a co-worker of the devil.

Having Dr. Luke in his ministry tells us Jesus co-worked with doctors to heal the sick.

There are several forms of medicine available that doesn't necessarily require popping pills or exposing your body to harmful ingredients. God provides numerous healing modalities to explore and discover which works for you and professionals who can best explain how to use those modalities. Therefore, seek a qualified professional to help as you pray, and God will heal you.

It's God's Will for You To Be In Good Health

“Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.”

3 John 1:2 (ESV)

You're God's beloved, and his desire for you is to be whole mentally and physically. So, when you ask God, your creator, to heal you physically, He will heal you as he delights in your wholeness.

What Does God Say About Mental Illness?

God says that mental illness results from disobeying Him and not casting your cares on him.

In Deuteronomy 28:28 (NIV), the children of Israel were warned, “The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness, and confusion of mind.”

This would be the case if they disobeyed God. It's clear, therefore, that disobedience to God causes mental illness.

Really? Yes! Not casting your burdens onto him is one way of disobeying God. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) warns you not to be anxious regardless of the prevailing circumstances. Whether it's a lack of money, shelter, food, clothes, children, or a marriage partner, don't be troubled.

Situations that make you anxious oppress your heart and mind. But God says you should make them known to him through prayers and petitions. Also, give thanks in such situations because you know that he will help you.

Consequently, God's peace, a gift to those who love him, will guard your hearts against depression.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.”

John 14:27 (NIV)

After all, your heavenly Father cares for you and wants the best!

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

1 Peter 5:7

How Does God Help the Mentally Ill?

God helps the mentally ill through his healing power, which restores their sanity. On one of his missions, Jesus met an insane man and had compassion for him.

“For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.”

Mark 5:4-5 (NIV)

Due to the demon that possessed the man, the people tried binding him with chains to control his actions. It was vain work! He tore and broke loose of them.

Worse still is that he could also cut his body using stones. That's adding insult to injury, right? Thank God; Jesus had mercy on him and acted upon that situation. Jesus cast the evil spirits out of the man, and God's power instantly healed him.

When the people came, “they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.”

So, God says with Him, all things are possible, including healing all mental sickness! Just let it be known to him. He will heal you.

What Bible Verse Can I Read for Healing?

Wherever Jesus went, first, he taught the good news (the Word)! Jesus went throughout the towns, healing every disease as he spoke the good news. It's, therefore, paramount to read encouraging bible verses for healing every day and claim your healing.

Also, meditate on these healing scriptures.

Sealing It!

What does the Bible say about healing prayer, therefore? Simply, God answers such prayers. He takes delight in healing the sick. Jesus demonstrated this by healing every sick person he met.

The more I read the verses listed above, the more I realized He healed me miraculously. So, I'm not only a believer but a WITNESS that ALL things are POSSIBLE with God!

The good news? Miracles are still happening each and every day all over the world. They didn't end when the last Apostle of Jesus Christ died.

So, don't be discouraged by the doctors' reports. I was told that I would never heal but would die before turning 30 (my 30th birthday was in 2013)! It's a miracle. You, too, will be healed if you believe! I'm free. Believe, and you will also be free.

Ask the Father to forgive you. Also, believe and beseech. Make a miracle prayer and cast out the demon of sickness out of your body.
