Is Light Therapy Biblically Acceptable?

Light therapy, a relatively new treatment that uses natural light to heal, is gaining popularity as a hopeful option for those with various health problems. While the science looks solid, this trend raises an important question: Is light therapy a biblically acceptable form of alternative medicine?

When considering the link between faith and health, we should contemplate how biblical teachings connect with modern practices. As a Christian, you may rightfully want (and need) to honor your spiritual beliefs with effective health treatments that meet physical, spiritual, ethical, and moral standards.

In this article, I'll explore how light therapy may or may not fit with scripture and discover whether it can support your journey while working alongside faith-based healing.

Please consult with your pastor and healthcare provider before making your own informed decision as to whether or not light therapy is suitable for you.

The Science of Light Therapy

Light therapy is based on the premise that it uses specific wavelengths of light to influence biological responses through photobiomodulation.

The photobiomodulation principle is essentially using light to stimulate and optimize cellular function, promoting healing.

Far from just being a sunlight soak, light therapy delivers precise wavelengths that can trigger a physiological or psychological response. These responses can improve mood, reduce pain, enhance metabolic functioning, and even accelerate wound healing. Research also suggests that light therapy may be more effective in resetting your circadian clock than traditional methods like melatonin supplementation or other medication-related interventions. This potential for holistic healing can inspire hope and optimism about its compatibility with biblical principles.

Light therapy is quickly becoming a helpful addition to many wellness practices, especially for those who want to depend less on modern medicine systems and more invasive treatments.

What the Bible Says About Science

The Bible describes creation as a purposeful act by God, encouraging believers to explore the natural world. For example, Psalm 19:1 says that the heavens show God's glory, suggesting that nature can help us realize how much we cannot understand but instead look at through awe-inspiring appreciation for His work. Scientific exploration is one way to appreciate God's work, as long as it isn't intended to replace God, His Glory, and our appreciation of His work.

The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament showeth his handiwork.

Psalm 19:1 (ASV)

The Book of Job discusses the wonders of creation, showing that while we do not understand everything, it is valuable to seek answers.

Faith gives us purpose, while science encourages exploration. Ultimately, these two paths can come together, creating a worldview where reason enhances belief and inspires wonder at the complexity of life.

What the Bible Says About Healing

The Bible does not compartmentalize healing into spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects. Instead, it underscores the interconnectedness of the whole person. It encourages us to view ourselves holistically, recognizing the profound impact of our spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical needs on each other. This interconnectedness, when understood, can enlighten and inform our approach to health and healing.

The Bible mentions a few instances of physical healing, the importance of taking care of your body, and the relationship between spiritual and physical health.

Healing in the Bible:

The Bible records several instances where Jesus Christ and other biblical figures healed the sick. These stories underscore a divine interest in your physical health and well-being. For example, Jesus healed the sick, the blind, the lame, and those with various diseases (Matthew 4:23-24, Matthew 8:16-17), demonstrating God's compassion and power over physical ailments.

Taking Care of Your Body:

The Bible also emphasizes the importance of caring for your body, as it is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). This passage suggests that Christians should view physical bodies with respect and care, understanding that they are sacred vessels. Engaging in practices that promote physical health, such as exercise, balanced nutrition, and getting adequate rest, is absolutely in line with biblical teachings.

The Spiritual and Physical Health Connection:

The Bible often connects spiritual health with physical health. For instance, it suggests that anxiety and worry can lead to physical ailments (Matthew 6:27, 25-34). Conversely, peace of mind and joy are associated with health and healing (Proverbs 17:22, Psalm 41:3). This interconnection could suggest that practices that enhance mental well-being, such as light therapy (which is known to improve mood and reduce anxiety), could be beneficial from a holistic health perspective.

Healing and Prayer

The Bible encourages believers to pray for healing (James 5:14-15).

While James 5:14-15 refers explicitly to prayer, it shows you that God is interested in the physical health of His people and that your faith plays a role in your healing.

The Bible teaches the importance of physical health, spiritual and physical health interconnectedness, and examples of divine healing. All of these factors suggest a holistic viewpoint of health and well-being.

From a holistic viewpoint, light therapy could be seen as compatible with biblical principles when used in conjunction with medical advice and in a manner that respects your body's sanctity. This approach empowers you to take responsibility for your health, considering both scientific and spiritual perspectives in your decision-making process.

However, interpretations can vary, and discussing your options with your pastor is essential.

Biblical Models for Healing: The Bible presents several models for healing, including:

  1. Prayer and faith (Matthew 8:5-13, Mark 11:22-24)
  2. Anointing with oil (James 5:14-15)
  3. The laying on of hands (Mark 6:13, Acts 28:8)
  4. The authority of believers (Matthew 10:1, Luke 10:19)

Healing and the Church: The Bible encourages believers to care for the sick and pray for their healing (James 5:13-16, 1 Corinthians 12:28). The church is called to be a community of healing and restoration, reflecting God's character and purposes.

Death and Ultimate Healing: The Bible promises that death brings ultimate healing, where believers will be absent from the body and present with the Lord (1 Corinthians 15:55-57, Revelation 21:4).

Key Verses:

  1. “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:26)
  2. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
  3. “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
  4. “Jesus said to him, ‘Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.'” (Matthew 9:22)

Is Light Therapy Considered a Biblically Acceptable Form of Alternative Medicine?

First, let's note that “light therapy” is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible.

However, the Bible encourages physical, mental, and spiritual well-being (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 3 John 1:2).

19 Or know ye not that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have from God? and ye are not your own; 20 for ye were bought with a price: glorify God therefore in your body.

1 Cor 6:19-20 (ASV)

Beloved, I pray that in all things thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

3 John 1:2 (ASV)

Glorify God in Your Body

Light therapy aims to improve mood, energy, overall wellness, and sleep, which are essential aspects of well-being. Many Christians in the wellness industry argue that light therapy aligns with the biblical principles of taking care of your body and seeking healing.

However, the Bible does not explicitly endorse or condemn light therapy, so its acceptance would depend on your convictions and the context in which it is applied.

It's also important to note that the Bible encourages people to seek medical advice when ill.

  1. Mark 2:17: Jesus says, “Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick people do.” which highlights the importance of medical care for those who suffer.
  2. Leviticus 13-14: The Bible provides detailed instructions for diagnosing and treating skin diseases, emphasizing the role of doctors (or “priests” in this context) in identifying and treating illnesses.
  3. Isaiah 38:21: God speaks through Isaiah, promising to add 15 years to Hezekiah's life, demonstrating God's sovereignty over human life and health, even in the presence of medical care.
  4. Matthew 9:12: Jesus quotes Hosea 6:6, saying, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.” This verse reinforces the idea that doctors are necessary for those suffering.
  5. Luke 10:25-37: The story of the Good Samaritan highlights the importance of compassion and care for the sick and injured, demonstrating the biblical value of medical service.

If you are considering light therapy, consult with a natural-minded (and ideally Christian) healthcare professional to ensure it's a suitable treatment option for your specific needs.

The Bible also mentions the need to glorify God within your body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), which in modern times, tells me that our health care needs to be just as thought out as everything else we do.

For example, it is common knowledge that the artificial ingredients in candy can directly cause a slew of adverse effects, harming your health. So, as Christians, we shouldn't be actively poisoning ourselves. Instead, it would be wise to be diligent about what goes on and in your body to not directly cause (unintended) harm.

My Thoughts as a Christian Herbalist & Student of Naturopathy

I've been praying over this topic for over a year, reading and watching countless testimonials, reviewing scientific studies, and spending time in scripture, seeking an answer. Through it all, I decided, comforted in His peace, to accept using phototherapy, but in as natural a method as possible.

19 Or know ye not that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have from God? and ye are not your own; 20 for ye were bought with a price: glorify God therefore in your body.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (ASV)

This verse highlights the importance of our bodies, comparing them to temples where the Holy Spirit lives. It reminds us that our bodies are not our own; God's sacrifice bought them and should be treated respectfully.

Light comes from Him. We wouldn't have it without His creation, much like plants used for herb-infused products, “alternative medicines,” and nutrition.

What I like the most about using light therapy is that no chemicals are being introduced into your body. Because nothing goes into your body (orally or absorbed topically), there are no contraindications or expected side effects, which is a really big deal.

Not altering our bodies chemically to achieve a form of medical relief is something I'm absolutely at peace with.

I'm currently using light therapy in two ways: regular time in sunlight and infrared reflective patches. The patches are especially helpful in the winter time but also help to target specific infrared wavelengths that help with targeted needs.
